The Irish Community
The first and most important thing to note is that Irish community in Auckland is not a single entity but rather a large number of groups. All of whom add their flavour to the whole - that is the Irish Community. Sceal has been proudly sponsoring the Irish Community for since 2005, and continue to do so with heavily discounted websites when they integrate with the Sceal Network. No matter what you're interests are - there is a facet of the Community that will have what you want. For summer sports - there's the Auckland GAA. Typically a younger and 'young at heart' crowd who are passionate about competing in Gaelic Football, and on the odd occasion - a game of Hurling. You'll find that there is a large number of 'Transient' Irish and Friends who move in these circles. Always a good laugh. For winter sports - there's Bohemian Celtic FC. You'll find a lot of the 'Transients that decide to stay a bit longer now we're here' crew typically end up here. Bohs has grown into a strong contender in the Auckland sunday football leagues. They have both mens and womens teams at all levels and they've got a bustling social scene (which tends to carry on nicely from the GAA). For 'founding fathers' type entertainment and banter - check out the Auckland Irish Society. This is the touchpoint if you need any information or would like to get a feel for the Irish in Auckland. They're a friendly bunch (as you'd expect!), have one of the biggest memberships of all the communities and are very active with loads of parochial type events throughout the year. For traditional arts - there's the Traditional Irish Dancing Association (TIDA) of NZ. Now these schools would give ANYONE a lesson in competitiveness. You're a brave man to cross any of these teachers! |
